SCHOOL OF BREATHING SCIENCES
Learned dysfunctional breathing is an enormous worldwide problem. The solution is interdisciplinary and requires a practical synthesis of respiratory physiology with behavioral science. The Graduate School of Breathing Sciences offers unique live, interactive, webinar-based degree and certificate programs that address this issue. We train experienced healthcare, human service, and performance consultants from around the world to bring behavioral assessment and modification to address breathing-related habits that may profoundly disturb or significantly enhance health and performance.
Master of Science in
Applied Breathing Sciences
Are you interested in bringing breathing science into your professional practice? Are you interested in a career in breathing science? If so, what are your degree training options?
Most degree training options, such as in pulmonary medicine and respiratory therapy, address medical applications. Emphasis is on organic disorders, treatment protocols, drugs, and medical technology.
Most forms of dysfunctional breathing are breathing habits, not medical conditions, that compromise health and performance. In fact, it is estimated that 10 to 25 percent of the US population suffers with disruptive, and often debilitating, symptoms and deficits resulting from dysfunctional breathing habits.
We offer the only degree program of its kind, an MS program that brings together respiratory physiology with behavioral science enabling practitioners to address dysfunctional breathing as a behavioral issue that can be effectively and responsibly addressed by a wide range of practitioners: healthcare, human service, and performance consulting.

and Professional Education
Many of our colleagues are interested in breathing science and its applications within their professions, but are not interested in earning another degree. Thus, we offer many of our MS degree courses for continuing education (CE) credit, including both certificate programs and individual courses.
The School offers two live-interactive webinar-based Certificate programs. Colleagues who complete the requirements and who subsequently decide to enroll in the MS degree program in Applied Breathing Sciences may apply their credits toward the completion of the MS degree. MS degree students automatically earn these two Certificates.
Educational Capnography Certificate
Habit Analysis and Modification
6 academic units (125 hours), 75 CE hours
The program qualifies healthcare practitioners, human service professionals, and performance consultants to use capnography and related instrumentation for (1) assessing breathing habits and their effects on health and performance and (2) teaching clients to manage and/or overcome dysfunctional breathing habits that compromise respiration and related physiology.
Behavioral Biofeedback Certificate
Applied Psychophysiology and Behavior Modification
14 academic units (280 hours), 180 CE hours
The Behavioral Biofeedback Certificate program qualifies licensed healthcare practitioners to integrate behavior analysis, behavior therapy, and biofeedback to address habits that disturb physiology. Students learn to use instrumentation for providing respiratory (CO2), autonomic (HRV), and somatic (EMG) biofeedback.
Our courses and proseminars are live. They are interactive. They are personal. Nothing is canned. You get to know your instructors, well. You get to know your colleagues, well. You interactively present your own materials, your own cases, your own comments, your own clients, and even your own live physiology! You learn from your colleagues and they learn from you. You share with others who represent diverse professions, diverse cultures, diverse challenges, and diverse ideas.
Live, interactive webinar education makes it possible to meet top experts in their fields from around the world and to interact with them personally. They share their materials and work environment and perform live demonstrations with clients right from their own offices, as can you.
Online webinar education means cutting major expenses and saving immense amounts of time.
- no travel costs,
- no housing costs,
- no transportation time,
- no disruption in your practice,
- no time away from your family
This means cutting the cost of education radically while improving the quality of its delivery significantly.
Many on-line programs are no more than glorified correspondence courses. Some “webinar” programs consist of recordings of lecture presentations, or if they are “live” you are part of a large audience without much, if any, opportunity to interact. In other words, they are “canned” presentations. This is NOT how we teach. Your colleagues and you are an active part of the learning environment.
